If you have more than one video, I recommend creating a YouTube channel
I’ve written before about the value of YouTube for pharma and this raised the question of whether you have to create a channel on YouTube. The short answer is no. There is value in adding even a single video to YouTube: you gain increased exposure and search visibility. Also important for pharma is the ability to turn off or edit comments, which you can do for either an individual video or a channel.
If you have more than one video, I recommend creating a YouTube channel. It’s free and provides a custom URL. It allows all of your content to be gathered in one place. And you can customize the graphic look and feel of the channel to include your branding.
The latest statistics show that video is more popular than ever. A total of 180.3 million Americans viewed online video content in July 2011, representing growth of about 1% from June, according to comScore Video Metrix data.
The Importance of Facebook
The increasing number of videos viewed via Facebook is indicated by its rise from sixth to third most popular U.S. online video provider. So if your company or brand has a Facebook page, be sure to share videos there as well. Google sites, including YouTube, remain the clear leader, with more than double the viewers than the second place, VEVO.

there are more than 40 channels on YouTube from pharmaceutical/biotech companies
Video is an engaging way to educate patients and healthcare professionals. Per Manhattan Research: “1 in 2 ePharma consumers prefers video to text due to their learning style. The study showed that online health videos result in consumers following up on the call-to-action, with 3/4 of viewers doing additional research.” Video is especially useful for patients with lower literacy levels.
Implications for Search
Universal Search (when search results offer images and videos, not just links to content pages on websites) is becoming increasingly important. Videos, properly submitted, are 53 times more likely to generate a first page Google ranking than traditional search engine optimization techniques, according to Forrester Research.
Many pharma companies have heard this message and are creating videos that they are posting on their websites. So why not put them on YouTube as well?
YouTube is Very Popular
In January 2011, YouTube.com ranked as the top online video content property with 144.1 million unique viewers. Data from comScore showed that 171 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content in January for an average of 14.5 hours per viewer. The total U.S. Internet audience engaged in nearly 4.9 billion viewing sessions during the course of the month. If YouTube were a search engine it would be second only to Google.

Social networking is big, but video is even bigger.
An April 2009 survey by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that the share of online adults who watch videos on video-sharing sites has nearly doubled since 2006. In the most recent study, 62% of adult internet users studied said they watched video on these sites.
By comparison, 46% of adult internet users are active on social networking sites, 19% download podcasts, and 11% use sites like Twitter. Read More
